In March 2023, I approved the lighting spec for a boutique hotel lobby. The centerpiece was a Visual Comfort Signature Mollino chandelier — thin brass arms, sculptural, the kind of fixture that's supposed to anchor an entire room. The accent lighting plan called for narrow spotlights aimed at it from four corners.
I said “narrow spots for drama.” The installer heard “maximum intensity, tightest beam.” Result: the chandelier became a glare machine. The crystal turned into pinpoints of hot white light, the plaster ceiling above went dark, and guests squinted when they walked in. We spent $3,800 swapping out the accent fixtures three months later.
That's when I stopped treating beam angle as a decorator's footnote. It's a budget decision.

Here's what you need to know: the flood light versus spotlight debate is really about how you want people to experience the room — and what you'll pay to keep that experience intact. No single answer fits every project. But the reasoning should be consistent.
Dimension 1: Beam Spread — the Numbers Lie Until You See Them
Industry-standard beam angle classifications (NEMA's beam types) look clean on paper:
- Narrow spot: 5°–15°
- Spot: 15°–25°
- Narrow flood: 25°–35°
- Flood: 35°–45°
- Wide flood: 45°+
In practice, a 12° spot aimed at a chandelier from across a lobby behaves completely differently than a 12° spot mounted two meters above it. Take this with a grain of salt, but most manufacturers list beam angle at 50% of peak intensity — the beam's edge isn't a hard line. Light fades. Two fixtures with the same listed angle will probably look different because of reflector and lens quality.
The Visual Comfort Leslie chandelier taught me this. Its frosted glass globes are evenly spaced, and an 18° spot hits only the middle globes, leaving the outer ones dim — a zebra effect that photographs terribly. A 40° flood covers the whole fixture but flattens the shadows that give each globe its presence.
What surprised me: for most chandeliers in commercial spaces, narrow flood (25°–35°) beats both true spots and wide floods. It's the zone where direction and coverage balance. Put another way — you're not lighting a single bead, you're lighting the object.

I once audited a property's lighting spend and found that 60% of the “unexpected overruns” traced back to accent lighting, not the chandeliers and not the downlights. Hidden costs show up in three places: lamp replacement, labor for maintenance access, and energy from over-spec'd fixtures.
Here's a real comparison from a 2024 corridor project. We had 48 hours to lock the fixture schedule before the ceiling went in — normally I'd want quotes from three vendors, but there was no time. We evaluated a 10° spot against a 35° flood for a row of wall sconces, 24 fixtures total.
The spot option initially looked efficient — lower wattage per fixture. But the target area was wider than the beam, so we would have needed two rows of spots to cover it. My rule: before comparing flood vs spot, get total system wattage and rated lamp life at real operating temperature, not catalog numbers. Enclosed downlight lights in particular can lose 20–30% of rated LED life without ventilation — that's a known industry issue, not a jab at any brand.
Dimension 3: The Chandelier Itself Changes the Answer
Not every chandelier wants the same kind of light. That seems obvious in hindsight; it took me a couple of expensive installations to learn it.
The Visual Comfort Signature Mollino chandelier — the one you see in high-end hospitality everywhere — has thin sculptural arms and open space between them. It rewards directional light. A tight spot from above throws crisp shadows onto the ceiling, and those shadows become part of the architecture. Wide floods wash them out; the fixture reads flat, like a photocopy of the real thing.
The Leslie sits at the opposite end. Its glass globes are the visual mass, so you want to light the cluster, not each globe. A spot creates hot spots and dim spots across the silhouette. A flood — or even a wide flood if the ceiling is low — makes the whole thing glow as one form.
The fixture's material and silhouette drive the beam decision. Brass and open arms: spots. Glass and enclosed forms: floods. I should add that this logic applies to accenting the chandelier as an object. If you also need general ambient light, that's a separate layer, and that's exactly what your downlight lights should handle.
Dimension 4: Flexibility — the Factor Nobody Puts on the Spec Sheet
Commercial projects change. The designer moves the art. The chandelier gets re-hung 30 centimeters higher because the bar counter arrived taller than planned (true story). The ceiling tile pattern gets swapped at the last minute.
Spotlights — especially gimbal or track-mounted types — can be re-aimed. Floods are what they are; the beam is set at the factory and stays that way. In my experience, that makes spots the safer bet for evolving spaces, and floods the safer bet for fixed, purpose-built rooms.
This is also where I want to address the small-project elephant in the room. A lot of lighting distributors lose interest when an order is six fixtures, not six hundred. I've lived that. Years ago, when I was sourcing fixtures for a single retail pop-up, one rep stopped returning my calls after she heard the quantity. The vendor who did walk me through beam angles on a two-page PO? I've given them over $60,000 in orders since. Small doesn't mean unimportant — it means potential. If a vendor treats your order size as a reason to skip basic guidance, that's a red flag regardless of which fixture brand you're considering.
So Which One Should You Spec?
Here's my honest, scenario-based take, after six years of tracking lighting invoices and a few expensive mistakes:
Spec spotlights when:
- The chandelier has open or linear details (like the Mollino) that benefit from shadow play
- Ceilings are higher than 12 feet, where the beam spreads naturally before it reaches the target
- The layout will likely change — retail displays, art rotations, moveable partitions
Spec floods when:
- The fixture has enclosed glass or diffusing shades (like the Leslie)
- You're illuminating a wall or architectural surface rather than a single object
- The ceiling is under 9 feet, where a tight beam creates a harsh pool of light on the floor
And use downlight lights for the ambient layer, separately. Trying to make a single fixture type do both accent and ambient duty usually means compromising on both. The lesson from my hotel lobby mistake was never “spots are bad.” It was: know what job each beam angle is doing, and budget for them as distinct line items.
One more thing. If a vendor makes you feel like your questions are too basic for your order size, walk away. There's a sales rep somewhere who'll spend 20 minutes explaining beam angles even when the PO is for four fixtures. Take it from someone who went from $200 orders to $20,000 orders with the same supplier — because they treated both the same.
That $3,800 fix in the hotel? The redo with narrow floods worked. The Mollino looked like itself again — shadows, brass, the whole presence. The guests stopped squinting, too.
