Why Your Designer Chandelier Keeps Flickering (And Why It's Not the Bulb's Fault)

The $4,700 Lesson I Keep Re-Learning

In February 2023, we installed a visual-comfort gold chandelier in a boutique hotel lobby—the kind of piece the designers flew in from New York to approve. Two weeks after opening, the GM called me at 7 AM to say the lobby looked like a haunted house. Every bulb was pulsing. Not strobing, not off—pulsing. Like a heartbeat.

My first instinct, and I'm not proud of this: blame the bulbs. We'd ordered 60 LED candelabra bulbs from a supplier who promised "flicker-free." I called them. They asked what dimmer we were using. I said, "The one the electrician picked up." There was a long pause. That pause is what I should've heard three years earlier.

Here's the thing nobody tells you when you're speccing a visual comfort outdoor light or a statement chandelier: the fixture is rarely the problem. The bulb is rarely the problem. The problem is almost always the marriage between the two—and the dimmer officiating the ceremony.

What Buyers Actually Think the Problem Is

If you're reading this, you've probably typed "why does led bulb flicker" into Google at 11 PM with a client email open in another tab. You've already tried the obvious stuff:

  • Swapped the bulbs for a different brand
  • Tightened everything (twice)
  • Tested them on a non-dimmable circuit (they worked fine)
  • Googled "LED flicker fix" and bought a capacitor you still don't understand

All reasonable. All usually wrong. Because you're treating the symptom.

The symptom is flicker. The disease is incompatibility in the dimming system, and it's compounded by the fact that designer fixtures—Visual Comfort, Schonbek, everything in that tier—are built around assumptions about how you'll drive them.

The Deep Cause: Three Things Converging at Once

I don't have hard data on how many commercial projects hit this issue, but based on the 140-ish hospitality installs I've personally managed since 2017, my sense is that roughly one in three high-end chandelier installs has some form of flicker issue at handoff. That's anecdotal. I wish I'd tracked it properly. What I can say is that when it happens, it's almost never one cause. It's three.

1. The dimmer is lying to you about what it can handle

Most decorative fixtures—palm chandelier, tiered crystal, the sculptural plaster stuff—use individually socketed bulbs. Four, eight, twelve, sometimes twenty. That's fine for the fixture. It's murder on the dimmer's minimum load rating.

A standard residential dimmer might have a minimum load of 25 watts. Ten 4-watt candelabra LEDs = 40 watts. Sounds fine. But once you're dimmed down to 15%, the actual load the dimmer sees can drop below its floor, and the dimmer starts clipping the waveform. That's your flicker.

I said "standard residential dimmer." What I mean is: the one the electrician grabbed because it matched the plate finish.

2. LED drivers hate being under-driven

Every LED bulb has a driver—the little circuit board in the base. Drivers are designed to operate within a voltage range. When the dimmer chokes that voltage below the driver's threshold, the driver doesn't gracefully fade. It stutters. On and off, on and off, ten times a second if you're unlucky.

The bulbs in your halloween chandelier (and yes, I've specced several—candelabra bulbs, amber tones, flame tips) are especially prone to this because seasonal fixtures often use lower-wattage decorative bulbs where the driver has almost no headroom.

3. The fixture's wiring expects something you didn't give it

High-end fixtures from Visual Comfort and comparable brands are wired for specific use cases. Some are designed for ELV dimming. Some for TRIAC. Some ship with a driver in the canopy and want line-voltage down to the sockets. If you install it assuming "all fixtures work the same," you've just created the mismatch.

What It Actually Costs You

The hotel lobby issue cost us $4,700. Not in the fixture—in bulbs, an emergency electrician call at weekend rates, and a temporary dimmer replacement that didn't match the plate, which the designer then flagged in a punch list. That last part was free, except it cost us the next phase of the project.

But the number I care more about is smaller. On a 14-pendant linear install in 2021, we lost $890 and one week. The client saw flicker during the walkthrough. They didn't say "the dimmer is incompatible." They said "the light looks cheap."

That's the real cost. Not the parts. The perception.

When a client pays for a designer fixture—gold-leaf chandelier, alabaster pendant, whatever—they're buying a feeling. Flicker tells them the feeling was a lie. It doesn't matter that the fixture is perfect. What they remember is the pulse.

The Fix (Short Version, Because You've Heard Enough)

Two moves solve 90% of this:

  1. Match the dimmer to the driver, not to the bulb wattage. Ask the fixture supplier what dimming protocol the fixture expects. If they can't answer, ask again. If they still can't, that tells you something about their engineering support.
  2. Test with the actual bulbs you plan to install, at the actual dimming range, before final install. Not on the bench. In the room. At 10%, 50%, 100%. My team now does this on every install over $2,000. Caught 31 potential flicker issues in the last 18 months. Some were bulbs. Some were dimmers. Two were fixtures wired wrong from the factory.

That's it. No capacitor. No bulb-swap roulette. No 11 PM googling.

One Thing I'd Do Differently

Even after building the checklist, I second-guessed myself on a recent install. The fixture was a visual comfort outdoor light—a wall-mounted lantern with a small integrated LED array. The dimmer was spec'd by the landscape architect and I didn't verify it. Everything worked on the test. Then we handed over, and the client dimmed it to 5% two nights later. Flicker.

Turned out the dimmer's low-end trim wasn't set. Ten-second fix. But the two days between handover and the call were not fun.

I still don't have a perfect system. I have a better one than I had in 2017. That's probably the honest version of the story.
