For painted finishes, I use a color tolerance of Delta E below 2 for critical project colors. A Delta E of 2 to 4 is noticeable to trained observers, and anything above 4 is visible to most people. That standard comes from Pantone color matching guidelines, and it's a good way to talk about finish tolerance before you sign an order.
But for plated or antique finishes, a number is not enough. Ask for a physical finish sample and keep it. Then order all fixtures for the same space in one batch. If you match finishes from two different production dates, there's a risk. To be fair, most quality vendors control this well, but you should still ask how recent the batches are.

There are three common retrofit types:
- Type A: the LED tube runs on the existing fluorescent ballast. This is usually the cheapest swap, but only if the ballast is listed as compatible.
- Type B: the LED tube connects directly to line voltage and the fluorescent ballast is removed. This usually means the fixture must be rewired and lamp holders may need to be replaced. It's more work, but it gets old ballast heat out of the fixture.
- Type C: the LED tube uses a separate remote driver. It appears more often in larger commercial linear fixtures, and it has to be specified as a system.
The exact process depends on the tube manufacturer, so I won't give you a universal wiring guide. What I can tell you is to check the label before buying: look for a Type A/B/C marking and a UL mark. If the tube doesn't say it's compatible with your fixture, don't assume. Then ask an electrician to handle the Type B rewire. There are different lamp holders, shunted and non-shunted, and the wrong combination can create a short or make the tube fall out.
After the conversion, label the fixture: LED direct wire, no ballast. That is the kind of small step that prevents a future maintenance person from installing fluorescent tubes and causing a bigger problem. And if the converted fixture shares a circuit with new decorative lighting, verify that the dimmer and sensor are compatible with the LED drivers. A tube can be fine by itself and still flicker on the wrong controls.
