Every project reaches the same point. The fixture looks right on the render, the client says “let’s move forward,” and someone asks me to approve the order. I don’t do the design; I do the less glamorous part between spec sheet and hanging fixture.
I’m a quality/compliance manager in commercial lighting. For the past four years, I’ve reviewed incoming fixtures for hospitality and design clients—roughly 200 unique SKUs a year. The checklist below is the one I use when Visual Comfort is on the schedule. It works for a Visual Comfort Vendome chandelier, a Visual Comfort linear light, or a simpler project like adding an indoor motion sensor light.

Use this when you’re about to approve a fixture for a real space, not when you’re just collecting inspiration. Bring two things: the project schedule and the current fixture spec sheet. One caveat before the steps: these checks assume typical indoor ceiling heights, standard mounting, and a climate-controlled environment. If the project involves a sloped ceiling or an outdoor exposure, add supplier review.
1. Put the fixture schedule and spec sheet in one place
The first check happens before you open a carton. Match the exact model number, not just the name. “Visual Comfort Vendome chandelier” isn’t enough—you need the finish code, size, lamping, voltage, mounting type, and dimming compatibility.
I started enforcing this on every order in 2022, and it cut our reorder mistakes by about a third. In our Q1 2024 audit, 11% of first deliveries still had at least one spec mismatch. Most were the same four problems: wrong finish, wrong color temperature, wrong voltage, or a canopy that didn’t fit the junction box.
Do not rely on a product photo or an old catalog PDF. Request the spec sheet from the current manufacturer page or your rep. If a fixture has a custom finish, get the approval sample before you release the full order.
2. Look for the chandelier sign that photos hide
Let’s start with one chandelier sign I check before anything else: alignment. People assume a quality chandelier is about how much crystal it has. Actually, expensive fixtures feel expensive because the frame is straight, level, and symmetrical. The crystal just makes a straight frame look better.
On a Visual Comfort Vendome chandelier, check how the arms attach to the center column, whether the tiers line up, and whether the hanging chains are the same length. In 2024, we rejected a run because one arm was about 3/16 in. off from the approved sample. The vendor said it was within tolerance. We knew that once the crystals were hung, the difference would be visible every single day.
The same logic applies to less decorated lights. Look for solder joints, seams, and threaded connections. If a finial takes more than two turns to feel tight, that fixture needs a second look.
3. Define the light area, not just the fixture footprint
Most people size a chandelier by diameter. That is useful, but it misses the light area—the surface that the fixture actually lights. A 30-inch chandelier can visually fit a 10-foot dining table. If it uses dense metal shades, its light area may be a small pool in the center. If it uses clear glass and an open bottom, the pool is much larger.
For a Visual Comfort linear light, the light area usually needs to match a path or a work surface. A row of linear lights above a reception desk should light the desk, not the backs of the people standing at it. The same fixture can feel completely different depending on mounting height and lens type.
If exact footcandles matter, ask for photometric data from the manufacturer. For most Visual Comfort products, you can also control the light area with lamping and shade selection: same fixture, different light.
4. Treat a Visual Comfort linear light as a continuous surface
A Visual Comfort linear light is usually specified when the space needs a clean, continuous line. The biggest problem I see is not LED failure; it’s alignment and consistency.
- Lay out individual units on the floor and align them before installation. A 1/8-inch vertical shift at the joint reads clearly on a 10-foot run.
- Check laser-cut edges and diffusers for chips or uneven seams.
- When replacing part of an existing linear run, ask if the product is from the same color bin. Two linear lights at the same nominal color temperature can look different if the LEDs are from different production batches.
- Open the package under good light and look for fingerprints, scratches, or dust trapped under the lens. Once installed, small marks become permanent distractions.
If the fixture has multiple sections, request the driver map. Know how many drivers are needed, where they are located, and which sections are dimmed together. This is easy to fix on a spec sheet and expensive to fix after the ceiling is closed.
5. Plan controls early—including how to install a motion sensor light indoor
The fixture often gets approved before controls, and that is backwards. A beautiful chandelier can feel wrong if it is on a flickering dimmer or a sensor that ignores people. The question isn’t whether you can install a sensor. It’s whether you installed the right one for the space.

- Turn off the breaker and verify power is off before touching any wires. Treat it as live until confirmed.

The most frustrating part of a bad sensor job is that it looks like an electrical failure when it is usually a placement problem. The sensor is behind a door, too high, or pointed at a glass partition. That is also a light area problem, not a defective product.
If you are not an electrician, use one. Most local codes follow NFPA 70. A quality inspector’s job is to verify the plan, not to tell you to bypass code.
6. Give every order the same receiving inspection
I wish I had hard data on how many chandeliers arrive damaged in boxes that look perfect. I don’t, because we don’t always track cosmetic surprises as closely as we track electrical failures. What I can tell you anecdotally: it happens more often than people expect, especially with crystal, glass, alabaster, and plaster.
Open every box before the installer arrives. Compare the label to the PO. Look at the finish under direct light. Check all crystals for chips, all threaded rods for burrs, and all sockets for proper seating. If you find a problem, stop and document with photos. A $5,000 fixture can be replaced; a scratched fixture that is already hanging is much harder to argue about.
And yes, do this for small orders too. A single fixture order is not a “sample order” when it is the centerpiece of a boutique restaurant or a small hotel lobby.
Final note: small projects deserve the same review
I’ve never liked the idea that smaller budgets get a lighter quality process. A designer buying one Visual Comfort Vendome chandelier for a private dining room may be spending the entire lighting budget. It deserves the same scrutiny as a 40-unit order. Today’s one-fixture client can be tomorrow’s repeat buyer if you take the small project seriously.
The expensive mistakes in lighting rarely come from bad taste. They come from skipped spec checks, hidden alignment issues, mismatched light zones, and controls that don’t fit the space. Run the checklist before you hang anything. If you can’t verify it, don’t approve it.
